Best Locations for Family Photos in Monterey Bay
There’s a reason families travel from all over California for photos in the Monterey Bay area. Between the rugged coastline, white sand beaches, towering cypress trees, and golden coastal light, there’s no shortage of beautiful backdrops. Whether you’re dreaming of playful beach photos, dramatic ocean cliffs, or something more relaxed and natural, Monterey Bay has a location that fits your family perfectly.
As a Monterey Bay family photographer, these are some of my favorite locations for family photos throughout Pacific Grove, Monterey, Carmel, and Big Sur.
Carmel River State Beach
If you love soft neutral tones and a quieter beach feel, Carmel River State Beach is one of the best locations in Monterey County for family photos. The beach has beautiful white sand, rolling dunes, driftwood, and beautiful rocks where you can sit.
This location photographs beautifully year-round, especially during sunset. It’s perfect for families wanting a relaxed, barefoot coastal session.
Why families love it:
- Soft white sand
- Beautiful sunset light
- Great for young children
- Natural and timeless coastal feel
Lovers Point in Pacific Grove
Lovers Point Park is one of the most iconic locations in Pacific Grove for family photography. Between the rocky shoreline, small beach cove, grassy park areas, and ocean views, it offers a huge variety of backgrounds in a very walkable area.
This is one of my favorite locations for families because of the variety in a small space.
What makes it special:
- Ocean views and rocky coastline
- Small sandy beach
- Easy access and parking
- Great for playful candid moments
Asilomar State Beach
Asilomar State Beach is easily one of the most photogenic places on the Monterey Peninsula. The combination of dramatic rocky shoreline, sandy beach, windswept dunes, and coastal trails creates a stunning backdrop that feels straight out of California dreamland.
Perfect for:
- Larger family sessions
- Extended family photos
- Families wanting dramatic coastal scenery
- Sunset sessions
Carmel Beach
Carmel Beach is classic Monterey Bay. The soft sand, iconic cypress trees, and open ocean views create an elegant and timeless look for family portraits.
This location works especially well for families wanting a clean, airy, coastal aesthetic. It’s also one of the best places for sunset family photos in Carmel.
Things to know:
- Can be windy
- Sunset sessions work best
- Very family and dog friendly
- Gorgeous year-round
Garrapata State Park
Garrapata State Park is perfect for families wanting a more rugged Big Sur feel. With sweeping cliffs, tall grasses, dramatic ocean views, and hidden beaches, this location feels wild and untouched.
This spot photographs beautifully during golden hour and gives sessions a more adventurous, editorial look. This location is perfect if you want a Big Sur feel without driving too far. Bonus it’s right next to the Calle Lilly Valley.
Choosing the Right Location for Your Family Session
The best location really depends on the style and feel you want for your photos.
For soft and classic beach photos: Carmel Beach or Carmel River State Beach
For playful family moments: Lovers Point
For dramatic coastal scenery: Asilomar or Garrapata
One of the things I love most about photographing families in Monterey Bay is how every location brings a completely different feel while still showcasing the incredible beauty of the California coast.
If you’re planning family photos in Monterey, Pacific Grove, Carmel, or Big Sur and aren’t sure which location is right for your session, I’m always happy to help choose the perfect spot based on your family, lighting, season, and the overall look you’re hoping for.
