Posed Newborn Session vs. Lifestyle Newborn Session: What Type of Session Is Right for Your Family?
Welcoming a new baby is such a beautiful, fleeting season, and choosing the right type of photo session can help you remember those early days exactly the way you want to. At my studio, I offer both posed and lifestyle newborn sessions, each with its own unique look and experience.
If you’re unsure which direction is best for your family, here’s a simple breakdown of each option.
What is a Posed Newborn Session?

A posed newborn session is what most people picture when they think of traditional newborn photography. These sessions take place in my studio and focus on baby in carefully styled setups.
Your baby is gently posed on soft blankets or in props like baskets, bowls, or beds. I also use wraps, bonnets, headbands, and other accessories to style the session in a timeless, classic way.
The session usually includes:
- Solo portraits of baby in multiple poses
- Solid backdrops in colors you choose
- Gently posed parent and sibling photos (optional)
These sessions are designed for babies under 3 weeks old, when they are still super sleepy and flexible. Everything is calm, quiet, and cozy so your baby is comfortable and content.
What is a Lifestyle Newborn Session?

Lifestyle newborn sessions are more relaxed and natural. Instead of posed setups, these sessions focus on connection and emotion—capturing your family just being together with your new baby.
The colors are typically soft and neutral, and the posing is minimal. Think of cozy cuddles, rocking your baby in a chair, little fingers wrapped around yours, and big siblings peeking in curiously.
These sessions can take place:
- In your home, using natural light and your personal spaces
- Or at my studio, styled in a lifestyle-inspired way
That’s right—you can absolutely have a lifestyle newborn session at the studio! I have neutral bedding, soft wraps, and minimal furniture to create a clean, cozy look that feels like home, without the pressure of tidying up your own space.
Which Session is Right for You?
Choose a posed session if:
- You love classic, styled baby portraits
- You want a more polished, studio look
- Your baby is under 3 weeks and still very sleepy
Choose a lifestyle session if:
- You prefer natural, relaxed poses
- You want to include more family connection and interaction
- You like a soft, cozy, simple look
Not sure which one you want? Some families do a blend of both! I’m happy to help you plan a session that feels personal and meaningful to you.
