Light & Airy Style Guide

What to Wear for Your Mother’s Day Photo Session

One of the most common questions I get before a session is: “What should we wear?”

The good news — it doesn’t have to be complicated.

For these Mother’s Day sessions, the goal is a look that feels light, timeless, and effortless. The kind of style that keeps the focus on your connection, not your outfits.

Start with a Soft, Neutral Color Palette

Color is the most important part of achieving that light and airy look.

I recommend building your outfits around:

  • Whites
  • Creams
  • Light tans
  • Soft neutrals

These tones reflect light beautifully in the studio and create that clean, elevated feel you see in my work.

Simple and Elevated Always Wins

You don’t need anything overly formal or trendy.

Some of my favorite combinations:

  • A flowy cream or white dress for mom
  • White or neutral tops with light tan or beige bottoms
  • White t-shirts paired with light-wash denim
  • Soft knit textures or linen pieces

The goal is effortless and cohesive, not perfectly matched.

Dressy or Casual — Both Work

Dressy Option:

  • Flowy dresses
  • Soft fabrics like chiffon or linen
  • Neutral tones layered together

Casual Option:

  • White tees
  • Light denim
  • Barefoot, relaxed styling

Both photograph beautifully as long as the color palette stays soft and cohesive.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Instead of everyone wearing the exact same thing, aim for a palette that flows together.

For example:

  • Mom in a cream dress
  • Kids in soft whites and light tans
  • Partner in a neutral shirt with khaki or light denim

This creates visual interest while still feeling clean and timeless.

What to Avoid

A few things that don’t photograph as well in this style:

  • Dark colors (black, navy, deep tones)
  • Bright or neon colors
  • Bold patterns or logos

These can pull attention away from the connection in your images.

Keep It Comfortable

Especially for little ones, comfort matters.

If your child feels good, they’ll be more relaxed, which always leads to better, more natural photos.

Barefoot is always welcome and fits beautifully with the soft studio aesthetic.

Final Thought

The most important thing isn’t perfection, it’s how it feels.

When your outfits are simple, soft, and cohesive, it allows the focus to stay where it belongs — on your family, your connection, and this season of life.
